Presenting Tucson’s Flamenco Fashion Show

at the 3rd Annual Tucson Spanish and Flamenco Festival…

On Saturday, September 24th the Tucson Spanish and Flamenco Festival will present a treat for the fashionista in all of us!  This year’s event will feature the first ever Flamenco Fashion Show in Tucson, opening a flamenco concert evening on the festival’s beautiful outdoor stage.  Designers, models, photographers, and artists from all over the region will participate in this special occasion celebrating the splendor of flamenco fashion.  Throughout the years fashion has rocked the flamenco world with traditional and innovative costumes for occasions such as Sevilla's annual Feria celebration, theater and small venue performances, and flamenco parties of all styles. Spain holds a special fashion show called the SALON INTERNACIONAL DE LA MODA FLAMENCA that presents the country’s top designers.  “This is really the inspiration for our local event,” says Marita Gomez, festival producer and owner of Casa Vicente Restaurant. “We want to be able to bring Spanish culture to Tucson, and flamenco fashion, even a small taste of it, can bring the culture to life here in our pueblo.”

Designers, models, makeup artists, photographers, dressmakers, and boutiques are all invited to join in the showcase.  “We are hoping to get as much of the community involved as we can,” says Fashion Show Coordinator, Angelina Ramirez.  Ramirez is originally from Tucson, but now runs her own dance studio and company, Flamenco Por La Vida, in Phoenix, AZ. As a dancer herself, she knows how important the flamenco dress is in presentation: “… the dress helps set the tonality of your baile [dance].  It is an critical part of the creation process.” If you are interested in participating in the fashion show, click here:  Participate and download the application pdf form.

Showcased fashion will also be available for purchase at the festival’s boutique, giving festival-goers an opportunity to own a flamenco fashion masterpiece. “Anyone who is a fan of flamenco style can incorporate flamenco fashion into everyday ensembles!” says Ramirez.  Along with dresses and accessories, the boutique will offer the most important accessory for the flamenco artist – flamenco shoes.  A variety of styles and colors of shoes will be available from Spanish maker, Senovilla– shipped direct from Spain. Since flamenco-inspired fashion has found its way into current trends, Tucson can now enjoy a taste of this exciting worldwide phenomenon.
