On Friday, September 23rd the Tucson Spanish and Flamenco Festival will present Tucson’s first Concurso de Sevillanas!  Sevillanas is an Andalucian folk dance done traditionally in couples.  Because of its wild popularity in Southern Spain, along with its presence in flamenco, Sevillanas has become part of the flamenco artist’s repertoire.  Sevillanas is danced by all!  Men, women, and children of all ages perform this social dance at night clubs, parties, festivals and important events in Spain.  Spain offers dozens of Sevillanas events throughout the year, and our own city will get a small taste of this special cultural tradition in this year’s Tucson Spanish and Flamenco Festival.

The Sevillanas is open to all dancers.  Come join in on the fun and you might even walk away with a great prize!  Prizes will be presented by Macarena Giraldez, a flamenco artist from Sevilla; Leisa Forman, a former professional Spanish and flamenco dancer; and Olivia Rojo,  director of Tucson’s first flamenco troupe, Flamenco Y Mas.

This exciting event will lead off a whole night of flamenco entertainment with professional artists from all over the world!
