Lectures with Erica Ocegueda...

Erica Ocegueda trained in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the National Institute of Flamenco under Joaquín Enciñias and at the University of New Mexico under the tutelage of Eva Enciñias-Sandoval.  She received her BA in Theatre and Dance with a focus in Flamenco at UNM and danced with the pre-professional company Alma Flamenca under the direction of Marisol Enciñias.  She also received her MA in Dance History and Criticism at UNM.  She is currently a PhD student in Theatre Performance of the Americas at Arizona State University where she examines Azteca, Flamenco, and Mexican Folklórico dance and how it relates to expressing Mexican and Chicano identity.  Her current project examines Gitano and Chicano identities and how they interrelate and morph in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Flamenco Theory:  Where Philosophy Meets Practice”
  with Erica Ocegueda
Thursday, September 22nd
8:00 pm

Flamenco is not only an art form performed on a body, it is also an art form philosophized about and researched extensively both in and outside of Spain.  Flamencólogos have dominated the conversations about flamenco artists in Spain and the ramifications of these “flamenco experts” heavily influence the field.  Through curious discussion, we will begin to explore how flamenco philosophies play out (on and off the stage.)

“Flamenco Histories:  From India to Arizona”

with Erica Ocegueda
Sunday, September 25th
8:00 pm

This plática will attempt to trace the various trajectories of Flamenco from India to Arizona.  Through a discussion that traces Gypsy diaspora as it intersects with different cultures found in Andalucía, we will see how Flamenco arrived to the people and cultures of the Americas
.  We will look at written and oral histories that offer insight into Flamenco origins and see the similarities between Gypsy life and local heritage.
